Loss
John died of yellow fever while aboard USS Falmouth (1827) on August 12, 1855. The ship was at sea from New York to Key West at the time.
Other Information
He was one of six members of the entering class of 1851 who "were advanced and permitted to complete the course in three years."
From researcher Kathy Franz: "John was 5'5" tall with hazel eyes, black hair, and a ruddy complexion. Besides sisters Virginia, Missoura and Jerusha, John had an older brother Andrew and a sister Julia. In 1850 John's father was a hotelkeeper in Center, Indiana (now Indianapolis.)"
He is buried in Indiana.

Memorial Hall Error
Illness is not a criteria for inclusion in Memorial Hall. Also, John was a Midshipman at the time of his death; the rank of Ensign did not exist until 1862.
